The People Who Grow Our Food

The Cook family are big fans of our local Farmers Market, so it was an easy YES when I was asked to capture the spirit of the market and the people who make it beautiful!

Farmers Market season is a favorite of our family. We regularly shop “the outside ring” of the store and avoid the more processed food offered in the inner aisles; but we’d much rather buy local. Julia is a big fan of the May through October ritual and mentions it often, and we love watching the offerings change with the season.

So when the Birmingham Shopping District gave me an assignment to capture the personalities of our Farmers Market, it was an easy “yes”.

There are the exuberant personalities of the long-time founders…

…and the quieter demeanor of the artisans who just keep showing up and serving the community…

…and the dozens of individuals and families with a love of the land, their food, their craft and their community.

It’s always a little bittersweet when late October comes and the season comes to a close; but knowing that we’ll see my friends again in May sustains us through the winter.

  1. Lovely photos! I remember recently, temporarily living across from RO farmer’s market and that was lovely as well.

For a treat and to stretch the farmer’s market feeling, stop by Flint Farmer’s Market and the Sloan Museum or Planetarium. It’s open year-round. It’s a little south of an hour from Big Beaver to the Cultural Center.
